Himalayan Salt Lamps for anxiety – a hoax, or a great tool? These great little lamps are a relatively inexpensive way to help you feel better as you go about your day. A Himalayan salt lamp is especially a great choice for office workers, students, and people who are generally sitting still in one place for lengthy periods of time. My recommendation is to keep the lamp where you spend the majority of your time during the day.

What are they?
Himalayan salt lamps are essentially large chunks of salt extracted from the Himalayas. Salt lamps are generally pink and they are just hollowed-out salt crystals with a light bulb installed into the bottom of the crystal. All you need to do is plug it in.
How do they work?
When these lamps are turned on, the heat generated by the light bulb inside warms up the salt crystal. This heat slowly dissolves the salt. This dissolving is what allows the crystal to emit negative ions. These negative ions are why you can use Himalayan salt lamps for anxiety, depression, and overall mood. However, these lamps are only able to emit a small amount of beneficial negative ions.
What are negative ions?
Negative ions are believed to be incredibly beneficial for the body. While I won’t dive too deep into detail here as there is a wealth of information on the subject across the internet, studies involving negative ions have shown that they are capable of reducing depression, lowering anxiety, increasing oxygen levels in the blood, maintaining a healthy pH balance in the body, strengthening the immune system, and they can even promote a sense of well-being.

Himalayan Salt Lamps are generally believed to be beneficial in helping alleviate symptoms of anxiety, depression, and even allergies (though research for allergies is lacking). Because of the negative ions, I recommend Himalayan salt lamps for anxiety as they can be a simple and positive change to your daily environment. These lamps are also believed to enhance air quality and improve mood, particularly for those suffering from Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). They can also help regulate sleep! Salt lamps are great low-light lamps to keep on your bedside stand.

You do need to be wise about where you purchase a Himalayan salt lamp, as there are some counterfeits on the market. Your best bet is to purchase one from a reputable seller on Amazon. Below you will find a link for a great option. If you choose to pick one out yourself, look for certifications / approvals. There are now quite a few companies that have received recognition as having authentic salt lamps. As a general rule of thumb, these lamps are dim. The best way to spot a fake is from an absurdly bright salt lamp.
Using a Himalayan salt lamp for anxiety is definitely something that I would recommend trying. I was super skeptical at first and I really didn’t know what to expect. But, that’s kind of the beauty of these lamps – you just turn them on and go about your day – it’s not like you’re losing your time trying to make something work.
In my own personal experience, I’ve found that while a salt lamp won’t be the end-all be-all in your treatment, it can definitely be a positive factor that contributes to your well-being. I found that having a Himalayan salt lamp next to me while I was working at my desk all day helped to reduce the volatility in my anxiety. Small things weren’t making me unnecessarily anxious, and big projects that normally would have made me start to shake when I began them weren’t as much of an issue.
